4 Tips to Improve Your Oral Health

The new year is the perfect time to reevaluate and plan to make better choices, especially when it comes to your oral health. Resolutions can be difficult to keep, but consistency is better than perfection. Here are four New Year’s resolutions for a fresh start to your oral health.

Maintain an Oral Hygiene Routine

The core of good oral hygiene is a solid routine. This means removing bacteria and plaque from your teeth through proper brushing and flossing. Your dentist recommends brushing twice a day to thoroughly clean your teeth. Use fluoride toothpaste and gently brush your teeth with a soft-bristled manual or electric toothbrush for the best cleaning. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months, so this is an ideal time to ditch your old brush for a new one.

A good dental hygiene routine not only cleans your teeth but your gums as well. This is where flossing comes in. Numerous studies have shown regular flossing reduces plaque and food build-up between the teeth. This practice reduces the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and gingivitis. Essentially, flossing is one of the easiest ways to transform your smile.

If you’re having trouble building the habit of flossing into your life, a good tip is to focus on flossing just one tooth a day. One day two, focus on two teeth and then increase by several teeth each day. While this approach may seem silly to some, for people who struggle with flossing, it can be easier to start small to form a long-lasting habit. Remember, it’s never too late to start flossing or to create an oral hygiene routine.

Choose Healthier Food Options

Staying away from sugary foods and drinks is a no-brainer for healthy teeth. While it’s easier for some to go completely cold turkey, for others it helps to start slow when it comes to choosing healthy food options.

If you love juice and beverages, try to sip on lemon-infused water or mix juice and water together for a less sugary version of your favorite drink. Try to limit the number of snacks you have throughout the day or grab alternatives like fruits or nuts to chomp on. If you do decide to eat something healthy, make sure to brush or rinse your teeth thoroughly to protect them from decay.

Improve Your Smile

Talk to your dentist if you want to further improve your smile. The new year is the perfect time for a new you. From teeth whitening, braces, and veneers to crowns, bonding, and implants, there are many dental procedures that can completely transform your smile and create a more confident you!

Quit Harmful Behaviors

Hygiene and healthy nutrition can only do so much for your oral health. Harmful habits like tobacco use, teeth grinding, and harsh brushing are just some of the many habits that are detrimental to your teeth and mouth. Your dentist is here to help you with any of these habits, whether it’s prescribing a night guard for teeth grinding or instilling healthy brushing practices.
